I've managed to unpack enough stuff to get this up. Haven't found the stylus pen yet so grays will have to wait. Internet is up! Almost fully operational! ;)

Okay, grays added.

Yahhhh! Compulsive refreshing has paid off! Love the Snakes-and-Ladders (minus the ladders) storytelling layout.

Hey, "Snakes and Ladders" sounds like a good band name. :P

I'm relatively new to webcomics, these have all been great, but the movement of my eyes from where my mind expects the dialogue to be in a left to right format takes time to adjust to the implied flow/framing of the snakes (top to bottom in 3 frames from left to right), because I didn't register them as frames at first. Only complaint, promise, because the black and whites are beautiful, I didn't even register the lack of grays, and the story is ~awesome~...!! I NEED more!

The page was initially conceived as 4 regular vertical panels. And then I started messing around a bit with a sort of cracked glass style panels. It didn't quite feel right and then I went with the snakes for borders thingy.

The text flow is not perfect but I think it works okay. ;)

Who's the chap who got skewered in the lower right?
Will Katagnar be a traitor as well!?
...hmmm he's a little slow on the uptake..idk maybe he is smart enough to be part of a diabolical conspiracy!

Retro. The lack of grayscale reminds me of much of the work in early, pre-Heavy Metal American fantasy magazines like Creepy.

Not sure if it was the intent, but this panel format lends itself to multiple orderings, at least partially. You start in the top left, and wind up in the bottom right, but you have some freedom in what order you read the intervening panels. The ambiguity has creative potential.

Helegil's impersonator inspires fear. Is there any chance Helegil herself can make a reappearance in the last act, like Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother? For that matter, I am starting to wonder if Pieter will ever adventure again.

Those old anthology comics from the 60's & 70's like Creepy and Eerie featured some masterful B&W comics by the likes of Bernie Wrightson and Jeffrey Jones. I think I may still have some in my parents' garage!

More on the subject of fear next week! And yes, Pieter will return towards the end.

Fine work! On the strength of this episode alone, CSI Elfland has been renewed for another 5 seasons!

Yay! :D

On the downside, they're insisting on recasting Pieter with Vincent D'Onofrio. :(

No! Not Vincent D'Onfrio! As a self entitled and overbearing fan, I demand the CSI:Elf retaine cohesiveness by contacting the original cast to remain until death (which, of course, is irrevocable upon power words or any other form of sorcery that results in resurrection or zombification)!

Besides, I miss Pietr...:(

Luckily for Pieter, he's represented by foremost fantasy sequential art entertainment attorney, Clarence E. Wombat, Esq.!

Even a good lawyer can't help you now. Not with detective Blackfeather on the case!
Dude you're screwed.

I started reading left-to-right, top-to-bottom, before realizing that you laid in the guide snakes. Then I slowed down and read it correctly, rather appreciating the different layout. It's like Snakes and Ladders, but with words instead of ladders. Or something :P

Also - Kudos for mentioning Bernie Wrightson. The man was an Impressionist in black-and-white. He drew the light on objects, not the objects themselves. An astounding talent.

Wrightson is one of those comic artists who's work looks better and better with time, as you start to fully appreciate the mad skillz that went into his compositions.

I received your housewarming gift! It's gorgeous! Thanks, Gilley!!

Be careful what you say about name actors. That might complicate casting for the live action Disney version of Elf.

As long as they cast a top notch former olympic gold medalist for the lead in the Disney's Elf on Ice Extravaganza, I'll be satisfied. o__o

The panel margins in this page may have also been inspired by the fact that there's a rather large snake living in my garage.
